Criminal Law Mums is a well-being and professional development support group founded by Lauren Cassimatis in 2018. As an Accredited Criminal Law Specialist, mum, and Principal Director of Gallant Law, Lauren wanted to create a supportive space for criminal lawyer mums and related professionals.
Today, Criminal Law Mums has united over 550 members who are based all around Australia. Our members include women from a variety of legal practices and roles including criminal, employment, and family lawyers, judges, magistrates, mediators, legal lecturers and female law students. Each and every one of our female lawyers enjoy the benefits of developing relationships with incredible, like-minded women throughout Australia.
Lauren created Criminal Law Mums in response to her own experiences as a criminal lawyer and mum. As she began to pursue this passion, Lauren heard her story echoed in the experiences of other mothers. Mothers who were trying to juggle parenting and life as a lawyer. Women whose careers were being interrupted because they exercised their right to start a family, take maternity leave, or pursue flexible or part-time work.
Lauren wanted to create a group that offered lawyer mothers practical and emotional support to preserve and bolster their careers and overall happiness.
Criminal Law Mums is dedicated to offering the most robust support possible for fellow female lawyers. We are members of the Victorian Women Lawyers Committee, and as a Kaged Lions Ambassador, Lauren is dedicated to supporting fellow female lawyers in the mental health space.
"As a mum, you can sometimes doubt yourself and your skills, both as a mother and as a lawyer. It’s important to be able to share your experiences with others in the same situation and to support and empower each other. There are stresses unique to working in a profession that often involves traumatic and challenging matters. It can affect you emotionally, so it’s great to be able to share that experience as well. You are not alone." Lauren
